Top 12 Reasons Workers Are Seeking New Jobs

Voiced by Amazon Polly

The job market of 2024 has been daunting for many workers seeking new jobs. In fact, studies have shown that among white-collar job seekers, it took on average 294 job applications to land an offer – up from 254 in 2023. Also, it took more days for them to land an offer than the previous year.

But these statistics don’t deter people from seeking new jobs and roles in their careers. Actually, it’s expected that in 2025, six in ten workers will be looking for a new job. Why?

Top reasons people are seeking new jobs

The following reasons why people tend to look for a new job are not surprising. Many of my clients come to me citing these very reasons. Can you relate to any of these?

1. Low pay

2. Feeling unappreciated

3. Burnout

4. Limited career-growth opportunities

5. Poor management

6. Lack of flexibility

In addition, studies reveal workers are looking for the following in their next role (in order of importance to them):

1. Work-life balance

2. Job security

3. Interest in the work

4. Higher salary

5. Flexible hours

6. Career-growth opportunities

What to do about it

The above lists have obvious implications for both job seekers and employers.

For job seekers, you’re going to have a lot of competition again in 2025. Therefore, you’ll have to adjust your job search approach from just filling out online job applications to using more strategic approaches, like the ones I teach my clients, both in person and through my online video courses.

Also, I’ll soon share a follow-up post, entitled “How to Successfully Compete in the 2025 Job Market,” providing additional job search tips. Stay tuned and subscribe to this blog!

For employers, in order to fill the roles your employees are vacating for something else, you’ll likely need to find some ways to provide more flexibility for candidates, such as flexible hours, remote or hybrid options, unlimited PTO, or something more creative. You’ll also need to find both big and small ways to show appreciation to your employees. Click here for some ideas.
